Death of You 03:36
Our history tells a twisted story Yet part of me just can’t seem to move on (I haven’t forgotten) But you want to (This isn’t a contest) Maybe for you But we can never go back Been there, done that, lost track Trying to keep the score We fought for hollow rewards Fell on our swords Winning battles to lose the war I wish you happiness I wish you happiness And now that there’s nothing left to fight for The animus long since faded away (I think of you fondly) And I of you (Remember the good times) I often do You said I’d be the death of you Now I only want the best for you

about

Way back in the early aughts, I was mastering engineer for American synthpop label A Different Drum. Signed to that label was no other than Martin Permer with his project Capsize. I had the pleasure of mastering both the lead single and the album.

Who knew that 16 years later we’d have the opportunity to work together again? After remixing each other’s work, we decided to record a duet.

It started with Martin arranging an instrumental demo. I added vocal melodies, wrote the lyrics, and recorded my vocal parts. A month later Christina recorded her parts and Martin sent me an early mix. We went back and forth on mixing tweaks, mastering, and finally cover art.

The song is a conversation between two lovers who shared a turbulent relationship. Of course, every important relationship involves conflict. Many of us don’t resolve that conflict in a way that, looking back over the years, we can feel proud of.

The subjects of the song reach just that sort of resolution together, coming to terms with their regrets over what might have been and wishing each other the best.

If only I handled my relationships with such maturity in real life. 🫠
